Harlyn James Becker (born December 19, 1992) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and captain for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL). Becker played his junior hockey with the Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) prior to turning professional. He represented Canada at the 2011 World Junior Championships, where he helped capture a silver medal. Becker had a highly successful junior career, winning the first ever Memorial Cup for a team based in the Canadian Maritimes. He is also a recipient of the Frank J. Selke Memorial Trophy as well as the Michel Brière Memorial Trophy.
Early Life
Becker was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland the son of Eric and Michelle Becker. His father was a former American Hockey League (AHL) player for the St. John’s Ice Caps. His mother was working at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital where Eric had been a patient after suffering a career ending leg injury. The family stayed in St. John’s, having 2 other children— Hannah (b. March 22, 1995) and Hunter (b. September 22, 1998). Becker’s number 22 comes from his siblings birth dates, this number has traveled with him league to league.
